SK Telecom, the leading South Korean telecom carrier, has announced on Wednesday that they have developed an almost real-time mobile broadcast streaming technology in collaboration with Samsung. They have successfully demonstrated the technology on LTE-A network. The current generation mobile broadcast streaming technology has a lag of at least 15 seconds when compared to cable television or IPTV broadcast technologies. SK Telecom and Samsung have worked together to reduce this lag to just 3 seconds, thus making it easier for mobile users to enjoy real-time television.
SK Telecom and Samsung are aiming to commercialise this new technology by next year and use it in their mobile services. The telecom giant has announced that it will carry out joint R&D operations with Samsung to further reduce the lag and increase efficiency and convenience. They are planning to try and standardise this technology through industry associations such as 3GPP and MPEG.
