Dynamic Partition Reallocation for the HTC Pico

20130625T114700
Some older devices have a hard time keeping up with the latest Android releases. Despite processing power capable of running even the newest revisions of Android, the limited storage on many devices ends up preventing many legacy devices from enjoying the latest versions. A few days ago, we talked about a Motorola Defy repartition script that enlarges the /system partition, allowing users to load bigger ROMs.
A similar modification was made for the late-2011 HTC Pico by XDA Senior Memberthewisenerd. The modification works on NAND devices that don’t have separate partition table/file (sbf, PIT, etc). This is related to custom mtd-parts, which was used in quite a few devices like early HTCs or Sony. A modified TWRP made by thewisenerd combined with compatible kernel allows users to install ROMs that require a bigger /system partition than is currently available on the device. The HTC Pico has many variants, thus making it difficult to create a universal tool. However, thewisenerd’s tool works on almost all device variants.
If you’re still using the HTC Pico and you want to use some bigger KitKat ROMs, you should visit the awesom3 dynamic partition table resizing thread to learn how to load bigger ROMs onto your device.

Samsung Galaxy S6 release date: Five reasons why S6 could be better than iPhone 6

Latest speculations claim that the  Samsung Galaxy S6 will come with specs and features that are better than the iPhone 6.
Samsung's upcoming handset is  rumored to battle head on with  Apple's new iPhone 6 smartphones. The S6 will be released early next year, most likely in February, and will hit store shelves the following month. Below are the top five reasons why Samsung Galaxy S6 will be better than the new iPhone 6.
iPhone 6 has become controversial because of the #Bendgate issue, meaning the new Apple smartphones can be bent. Some users flooded the social media with photos and complaints about the new iPhone 6 being easily bent. The smartphones are thinner than its predecessors, which can be a factor in making the handsets bendable. Moreover, the casing is made out of anodized aluminum frame, which is a soft metal that is malleable. Samsung Galaxy S6 is rumored to pack a sturdier and more durable metal casing.
Latest Android L OS
Samsung Galaxy S6 is rumored to run with the upcoming Android L OS, and people know that Android tends to have less problems. iOS 8, on the other hand, is off to a rough start as the latest Apple operating system is plagued with bugs and issues after its launch alongside iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
More powerful chipset
Samsung can also promise a better and more powerful processor. The new phablet is expected to have a Qualcomm's Snapdragon 805. iPhone 6 runs with the new A8 processor partnered with M8 graphics co-processor.
Better Camera
The rumored smartphone is speculated to come with a 20-megapixel camera. The current Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge pack 16 MP snappers at the back. Moreover, the S6's shooter will be backed up by OIS. On the other hand, iPhone 6 smartphones retain the 8-megapixel camera.
Cheaper price
Samsung Galaxy S6 is believed to be available at a cheaper price than the iPhone 6 Plus.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 vs. Samsung Galaxy Note 4

The new versus the old comparison has been the highlight of the Samsung Galaxy series.

The Korean giant has been quick to release its latest versions into the smartphone arena. However, the latest and updated version released by the Korean number one smartphone manufacturing company, brought its earlier released versions directly in competition with each other.

Samsung has been the unprecedented king of the smartphone arena. However, with respect to the tablet segment, the Korean giant took time to establish its feet into the arena. The release of the Galaxy Note 3 tablet took the market by storm. The Note 3 dominated the phablet segment from the word go and continued to do so for a long time.

The release of its successor, the Galaxy Note 4 tablet this year has popped up the question – whether the Note 3 owners would upgrade to the latest release or not? Let us find out in the comparison review of both these prized tablets.

Interface and Functionality

The newer TouchWiz experience with the Note 4 tablet is not very different to what the Note 3 users have experienced already. However, the new software features in the Note 4 tablet mark the major difference between the two tablets. Visually, both the handsets offer a similar cartoony and outdated TouchWiz experience.

Looking past the external stuff, the latest software features added to the Note 4 provides it an upper edge over the Note 3 tablet. To be precise, the latest swipe features allow access to a plethora of functions. Additionally, the enhanced S Pen feature has increased the functionality of the Note 4 tablet.

Processor and Memory

In terms of the processor, the Note 4 tablet comes with additional advantages for being a successor to the Note 3 handset. The Note 4 comes equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 chipset, which offers better performance than the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, equipped in the Note 3 tablet. However, there is hardly any considerable difference between the performances of both the handsets. The Note 3 and Note 4 handsets are competent to load pages quickly in the web browser,
launch applications rapidly and are quick to navigate across the home screen.
In terms of storage, both handsets come equipped with 32GB of internal memory, which is further complemented by microSD card slots for memory enhancement.

Camera

The Note 4 comes equipped with an enhanced 16MP primary camera, as compared to the 13MP rear camera of the Note 3 handset. However, both the handsets encompass the optical image stabilization feature, which holds things steady while clicking snaps and recording videos.

Verdict

The Note 4 might draw out potential buyers for buying a newer version, but the battle with Note 3 would be a tough one. The Galaxy Note 3 is still a competent device in the phablet segment.

The Nexus 5 16GB variant cost around $385, while the LG G2 16Gb variant cost $393, and Samsung Galaxy S4 16GB variant is around $428.

Sony Xperia Z3 vs Samsung Galaxy S5

Xperia Z3 vs Galaxy S5 AH Main

Introduction

I am not looking forward to this comparison, the tough ones always harder to write than the ‘slam dunk’ kind.  The venerable Samsung Galaxy S5 is going up against the new and elusive Sony Xperia Z3.  The Galaxy S5 came out a few months ago and the Xperia Z3 will be out sometime this year, exclusively on T-Mobile in the U.S.  These two devices have so much in common and that is why it will be a difficult decision to weed out the best of these two wonderful smartphones.

Both of these devices have almost identical display sizes – 5.2-inch versus 5.1-inch – they are both Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.  The only difference is the display technology…the Z3 uses an IPS LCD and the Galaxy S5 uses Super AMOLED.  Both devices use the exact same Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor clocked at 2.5GHz and the same GPU chip.  The Z3 and the S5 both offer you a choice of 16GB or 32GB of internal storage and both devices had the ability to add an additional 128GB of internal storage via a microSD card slot.

Even the front-facing cameras (FFC) are almost the same – 2.2MP on the Z3 vs 2.0MP on the S5.  The batteries are only 300mAh a part – 3100mAH on the Z3 and 2800mAh on the S5.  Even their size and weights are very close with the Z3 being slightly taller (4mm) and slightly thinner by .8mm.  Both devices are running Android 4.4, the Z3 (4.4.4) with Xperia UI and and the S5 (4.4.2) with TouchWiz.

Please take a look at the detailed specification sheet below and you can see exactly where these two devices stand with each other. After that we will look at each individual device and point out its pros and cons to try and arrive at a winner to this comparison.

Specifications

Xperia Z3 vs Galaxy S5 Specs

Sony Xperia Z3

21_Xperia_Z3_Copper_Group
The new Sony Xperia Z3 is a refresh of their six-month old Z2, which never made its way to the U.S…such is the fate of many Sony smartphones and tablets.  We are happy that the Xperia Z3 will at least be on the T-Mobile network, but it would be nice if other networks and Sony could work out their differences and their products could then become more prevalent.  The Z3 is a beautiful device, made from metal and glass – ala previous iPhone – and it has a solid feel, if not a little uncomfortable to hold over long periods of time.

With all of their similarities between these two devices, we can find a few differences…the first one is the amount of RAM – the Xperia Z3 has 3GB and the Galaxy S5 chose to stick with 2GB.  The Main cameras are definitely different with the Z3 sporting a huge 20.7MP 25mm wide-angle lens, which will allow the user to fit more image into each photo.  Other than the larger lens, they both have a LED Flash and auto focus, and neither device has the Optical Image Stabilization (OIS).  Sony is known for their dedicated camera button and great camera sensors and the Z3 should not disappoint.  The Z3’s 3100mAh battery is larger than the 2800mAh of the S5, although Samsung has done a lot to improve battery performance, so the batteries could be a wash.

Both devices have the mandatory Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC and both devices do have Wi-Fi calling capabilities.  The Z3 has front facing stereo speakers, an FM Radio, and two big deals- the Z3 is IP65/IP68 certified against dust and water, so much so, you can actually take the Z3 underwater to film a video or take pictures and with an optional controller, and your Z3 can be used for PS4 Remote Play.  No pricing has been announced, but it is estimated to cost approximately $850-$900 off-contract.

Samsung Galaxy S 5

Samsung-galaxy-s5-ah-19

When the Samsung Galaxy S5 was released, you could ‘feel’ the disappointment in the air and the harsh words of early critics came from every direction; but after the flaming was put out (or at least smothered somewhat) it became clear that the S5 was an overall solid device.  With it available in over 160 countries and discounted from the start, it has actually turned out to be a good seller for Samsung.  The looks were not change much at all, other than a removable backing that gave the device a nice grip and feel, but many touted looked like a Band-Aid, however, many of those critics actually liked it once they saw it up close and used the device.

Going down the list of specifications, the Xperia Z3 and Galaxy S5 are very evenly matched.  As far as the display goes, if you are an AMOLED only fan, than the S5 is definitely for you, but many like the more ‘washout’ look of the LCD technology – I am not a fan of it, myself.  DisplayMate Technologies rated the S5 display as the “best display they have ever tested” – a title that held up until the Galaxy Note 4 beat it out.  The processors are identical, although the S5 does only have 2GB of RAM versus the 3GB of the Z3.

Even though Samsung improved the S5’s main camera from 13MP to 16MP with auto focus and an LED Flash, it does not stand up to the Z3’s 20.7MP 25mm wide-angle lens, auto focus and LED Flash – neither device has OIS.  Samsung has made great strides in preserving battery life and even has an Ultra Power Saving Mode (UPSM), so the 2800mAh removable battery should do battle pretty well against the Z3’s larger 3100mAh battery…although Sony has their own version of power saving as well.

As far as features or highlights go – the Samsung Galaxy S5 has IP67 certification for dust and water…certainly not as good as swimming with a Z3, but you are protected for daily use.  Both devices are Wi-Fi call capable, but the S5 is also VoLTE ready and the Z3 is not.  The S5 is also an IR Blaster and has a fingerprint scanner and Heart Rate Monitor built-in…necessary or not, you be the judge.  The S5 is running Android 4.4 KitKat with TouchWiz on top and is available on all major U.S. carriers and is cheaper than the Z3.

…And the Winner is…

xperia-z3

Summary

This is a tight race, but I leaned towards the Sony Xperia Z3 as the winner in this comparison.  I think too many times we go with what is familiar, comfortable and easily available – like the Samsung Galaxy S5.  While the Sony devices still seem rather a mystery to most of us, we have to give credit where credit is due.  It is a beautiful looking device with its metal and glass body (although smaller bezels would be nice), whereas Samsung really could have done much more than they accomplished with the S5 – look at the Galaxy Alpha’s design.  The displays are close in everything, the processors are identical and Sony threw in more RAM than the S5.  The Sony camera is definitely better than the Samsung’s, and they even threw in a larger battery (although not removable) and yet the Z3 is thinner than the S5.

VoLTE calling is coming, but as long as Sony gets it in their Z4, the Z3 will be okay in that respect.  It has better waterproofing – not necessarily a plus to some people, but a nice feature to include.  The front speakers trump a rear speaker any day, and if you are into PS4 game playing, the Z3 is definitely your pick.  Yes, the S5 has an IR Blaster (I like that feature) and a fingerprint scanner (could be useful in the future) and a Heart Rate Monitor (a nice idea if you are a runner), but are they really enough to push the Z3 aside – I think not.
