Samsung has a plethora of phones and tablets in its lineup, and regularly releases firmware updates for various devices. These can include major updates, which bring a newer version of the OS to a particular device, or minor ones that improve performance and stability and fix bugs. Software updates for Samsung devices roll out in various regions every day, and you can find out which firmware updates were pushed out by the company over the last 24 hours through our firmware list.

Samsung launches the Gear S smartwatch in India

After launching the Gear S in the US, the UK, and South Korea, Samsung started taking pre-orders for the Gear S in India last week through its official e-retail store. Starting today, the SIM card slot-equipped smartwatch can be purchased in India for INR 27,900 (~$454) through Samsung’s official eStore and Amazon. The Tizen-based smartwatch, which is available in black and white colours, is one of the most expensive smartwatches available in the country. It features a 2-inch curved Super AMOLED screen, 1GHz dual-core processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB storage, and a 300 mAh battery. It is also equipped with 3G connectivity, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth v4.0, and A-GPS. It has a host of other sensors such as accelerometer, UV sensor, and heart-rate monitor for tracking health and fitness related information.

Galaxy Note Edge Premium Edition

Well, German consumers have voted that they want the Galaxy Note Edge to come to their country, and Samsung has announced that it is doing more than just bringing the device to Germany. The company has announced a Premium Edition of the device specially for the German market. The Galaxy Note EdgePremium Edition will come with a flip wallet, display cleaner, three years of warranty, a tips and tricks manual, and also a 64GB Samsung EVO series microSD card.

That’s quite a few goodies, but Samsung will be taking things even further for the first 500 consumers: these consumers will get to visit Samsung’s headquarters in Schwalbach for an exclusive tour, followed by a free dinner. Oh, and if you’re wondering how much all this will cost – well, you will have to shell out EUR 899, which is a lot, but at least that boatload of cash will get you the aforementioned stuff in addition to the funky curved phablet.

Android ups its lead over iOS

Android -- Google's operating system for mobile devices -- continues to maintain a hefty market-share lead over Apple's iOS in the US, according to stats released on Thursday by research firm ComScore.

For the three months ending September, Android's share of the US smartphone market was 52.1 percent, up slightly from 51.9 percent for the prior three months. Over the same period, Apple's share dipped to 41.7 percent from 42.1 percent.

But Apple's share may well show growth in ComScore's next report. Apple launched its iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus devices on September 19, so the new phones weren't included in most of the three-month period cited by ComScore. Further, many smartphone buyers held off on new purchases as they waited for the iPhone 6 to debut. The phones got off to a hot start during the opening weekend with sales of more than 10 million units.

Demand for both versions of the iPhone 6 will very probably increase Apple's market share over the next three months and help it catch up with Android. However, Google and other Android-device makers have been busy launching their own new phones, including the Nexus 5 and the Samsung Galaxy Note. So how much market share Apple can snag from Android this quarter is the question.

Looking at other smartphone platforms, ComScore placed Microsoft's Windows Phone in third place with a market share of 3.6 percent, inching up from 3.4 percent. BlackBerry remained virtually static with a share of 2.3 percent, down slightly from 2.4 percent.

Among smartphone makers, Apple led the list with its 42.1 percent share. Second-place Samsung scored a 29 percent share, up from 28.6 percent. LG took home third place with a 6.9 percent share, followed by Motorola with 5.4 percent and HTC with 4.4 percent.

For the three months ending with September, ComScore counted 174 million people in the US who owned smartphones, up just 1 percent from the prior three months.
