Samsung SM-A500 photos leak from TENAA, is as thin as the Galaxy Alpha

The Samsung SM-A500 has been making unofficial appearances at a steady pace in recent weeks, and today, we can finally feast on our eyes on what the device looks like thanks to China’s regulatory body TENAA. The pictures show a rather unassuming design; while the design might not look very attractive, the SM-A500 is as thin as the Galaxy Alpha at 6.7 mm (the phone measures 139.3×67.7×6.7 and weighs 126 grams.) As we exclusively revealed recently, the SM-A500 will have a full metal body, though the images don’t exactly confirm that (but you can see what looks like a metal frame on the sides.)

The SM-A500 is expected to feature a 5-inch HD Super AMOLED display, a quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor, 13-megapixel rear camera, 16GB of internal storage, a microSD slot, and a 2,330 mAh battery. It has a 5-megapixel camera on the front, and will run on Android 4.4.4 KitKat with the new TouchWiz UX from the Galaxy Note 4. At this point, the name of the device isn’t known, though an official announcement should happen sometime this month and divulge anything that hasn’t already leaked.

Samsung starts mass producing 20nm 6Gb LP-DDR3 RAM chips for mobile devices

Samsung Electronics has announced that they have started mass producing 6Gb LP-DDR3 (Low Power Double Data Rate) RAM chips for mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. These RAM modules would be fabricated using 20nm process and would have a per-pin data transfer rate of 2,133 Mb/s. When four 6Gb chips are stacked together for a 3GB LP-DDR3 module, it would result in a 20 percent smaller package. It would also provide a performance improvement of up to 30 percent and 10 lower energy consumption when compared to current generation 3GB RAM packages with 6Gb LP-DDR3 chips.

Samsung Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4 might get Android L in November/December

Android L is one of the best versions of Android since the OS’ inception, bringing over a new design direction and quite a few important features, like a switch to Google’s new ART runtime for apps, lockscreen notifications, and support for 64-bit processors. Naturally, people have been wondering when their Samsung devices will get updated to Android L, and thanks to our insiders, we have an estimated time frame for the Galaxy S5 and the Galaxy Note 4. Both devices should get the Android L update by the end of November/early December – it’s not clear when Google will make the new version available for Nexus devices, but based on our info Samsung should be pretty quick at adapting it for its own devices.

Of course, with software updates it’s never a guarantee that these time frames will work out, so it would be best not to get your hopes too high. However, with competing devices like the low-end Moto G getting quick updates these days, it’s possible Samsung is working at pushing updates faster than it has in the past, a scenario we can always get behind.

Samsung working on a smartwatch with a fingerprint sensor and new payment system

The smartphone market has mostly saturated and is suffering from a dearth of innovative ideas, so it’s not surprising that manufacturers are now focusing on smartwatches as they look towards finding the next big growing market. Samsung has been at the forefront of launching smartwatches in the last year, and now, rumors out of the Korean media indicate that the company is working on a smartwatch with a fingerprint sensor and a new payment system in collaboration with PayPal. The latter will apparently be made available in almost 50 countries, and offer consumers the possibility of buying products before entering an actual product stores.

The payment system will provide promotional information of nearby stores to the user, so they can choose a product and make a payment after entering the store. The fingerprint sensor will likely be used for quick authentication in stores, similar to how it is done on the Galaxy S5. According to the source of this information, this new smartwatch could see the light of day at Mobile World Congress next year, a time frame that would put the watch in competition with the upcoming Apple Watch.

With the Galaxy Alpha one of the most interesting (and good-looking) smartphones Samsung has ever produced, we’ve been looking forward to see what the company comes up with in its new A series of devices. We exclusively confirmed that the SM-A500 would be the first of three handsets in the lineup, and today, we can confirm that it will be launched as the Galaxy A5. We also managed to grab hold of some pictures of the device in its flesh, and as you can see, the design is similar to the Galaxy Alpha, though naturally it isn’t looking as premium since it will be launched as a mid-range device.

We earlier said that the Galaxy A5 would feature a full-metal body, but according to our insider, that might not be the case. Apparently, the phone isn’t made of plastic or metal, but a material that “feels cold in the hand,” unlike the Galaxy S5 or the Galaxy Alpha. Metallic devices often feel cold to the touch, but it’s possible Samsung is using some unique (read: not to standard) material in order to keep the device’s cost down while still maintaining a somewhat premium feel.

In terms of hardware, we are once again told that the Galaxy A5 features a 5-inch HD Super AMOLED display, a 13-megapixel camera, and the newest version of TouchWiz as seen on the Galaxy Note 4. Other specs include a Snapdragon 400 processor, 2,330 mAh battery, 16GB of expandable storage, and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera.
